WASHINGTON (NewsNation Now) — A new hotel in Washington, D.C., is using art to spread the message of female empowerment.
Hotel Zena features more than 60 pieces of art, all created by female artists and women-owned businesses. There’s also a wall covered with 8,000 protest buttons.
Executives said the hotel is meant to celebrate the accomplishments of women, and the fight for gender equality. The hotel, part of Viceroy Hotels & Resorts, opened last week, and its unveiling comes around an important milestone.
“There’s such great significance for us opening during this time, especially for the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote,” said Natalie Vachon, the hotel’s director of marketing. “We want to make sure that everything they have done in the past, everything that women historical figures have done in the past, are really celebrated in this environment.”
The hotel’s owners said their artwork may push some boundaries, but that it’s worth starting a conversation around the issues women fought for.
