ROCHESTER, N.Y. (NewsNation Now) — Protesters on Sunday claimed Strong Memorial Hospital is partly accountable for Daniel Prude’s death.

Prude was taken to the hospital by police for a mental health evaluation on March 22 but was released after a few hours.

Prude, a 41-year-old Black man from Chicago, died March 30 after he was taken off life support, seven days after Rochester police took him into custody. Prude’s family said he was suffering a mental health crisis, but on the bodycam video, his brother can be heard telling the responding officer that Prude is high on PCP. News of the incident just came to light on Sept. 2.

The incident led to protests earlier this month after body camera footage was released that showed officers placing a spit hood over his head. The medical examiner ruled Prude’s death a homicide, with the cause of death including “complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint due to excited delirium due to acute phencyclidine intoxication.”

Hospital administrators say they’re conducting an investigation but privacy laws prevent them from releasing details in the case. 

Earlier this month, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren fired the police chief and suspended her top lawyer and communications director Monday in the continuing upheaval over Prude’s death.
