(NewsNation) — U.S. Secret Service officers shot and killed an intruder who was smashing windows at the Peruvian ambassador to the United States’ residence on Wednesday.
The ambassador and his family were inside the residence in the Forest Hills neighborhood of northwest Washington when they heard windows being smashed and called the police. When Secret Service officers arrived, they encountered a man, armed with a metal stake, in the residence’s backyard. Police deployed a Taser to detain him, but Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee said it didn’t appear to affect him.
Officers then shot the man, who appeared to be in his late 20s or 30s. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released, and it is still unclear why he was at the Peruvian residence.
