CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – A Calhoun County seventh grader had his leg amputated after being severely hurt in a school bus crash earlier this month.
Doctors say 14-year-old Kevin Wilson lost blood flow and pulse in his leg after the after-school activities bus overturned on its side on March 4. Doctors have been trying to restore feeling in his leg but ultimately advised the family that amputation was his best option for recovery.
Investigators say the driver, Jeffrey Brannon, was allegedly drunk at the wheel. They say his blood alcohol level was .161, which is double the legal limit, and four times the legal limit for bus drivers in West Virginia.
Brannon faces 22 charges. He originally only faced six for the hospitalized students. Now Brannon faces new charges for the 16 additional students who were also hurt.
There is still no timeline on when Wilson could be released from the hospital.
