SANTA MONICA, Calif. (NewsNation Now) — More than 350,000 Ring smart doorbells are being recalled after a fire hazard was found.

“The video doorbell’s battery can overheat when the incorrect screws are used for installation, posing fire and burn hazards,” according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

There were 23 reports of doorbells igniting and eight reports of minor burns.

According to the federal government, these issues are related to the installation process.

“If the doorbell is installed correctly, there is no risk to consumers or potential hazard present,” Ring wrote on the company’s website.

The safety of our customers is our top priority. We have and continue to work cooperatively with the CPSC on this issue, and have contacted customers who purchased a Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) to ensure they received the updated user manual and follow the device installation instructions. Customers do not need to return their devices.

Ring Spokesperson

The recall impacts Ring Video Doorbells (2nd Generation) sold between June and October 2020.

According to a Ring, the company has emailed known customers who own the doorbell at issue to ensure installation instructions are properly followed.

Consumers can search their doorbell’s serial number on the website to see if they are part of the recall.

“Consumers should immediately stop installing the recalled video doorbells and contact Ring for revised installation instructions or download them here,” the CPSC said.

“We have pursued a voluntary recall in full cooperation with the CPSC and Health Canada with the remedy of an updated instruction manual. Customers can also visit the CPSC or Health Canada websites for more information,” said a Ring spokesperson.

The revised instructions show a safety warning about which screws to use when installing.

Ring says “you do not need to return your device. Simply follow the revised instructions.”
