CHICAGO (News Nation) — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is in the hospital after undergoing a non-surgical procedure Wednesday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Ginsburg underwent a minimally-invasive procedure to revise a bile duct stent that was originally placed at Sloan Kettering in August of 2019, according to a statement from the Supreme Court.
According to her doctors, stent revisions are common occurrences and the procedure, performed using endoscopy and medical imaging guidance, was done to minimize the risk of future infection.
The 87-year-old Supreme Court justice is resting comfortably and is expected to be released from the hospital by the end of the week.
Ginsburg was discharged from a hospital on July 15 after being treated for a possible infection.
Ginsburg, who joined the court in 1993 after her appointment by President Bill Clinton, has been treated four times for cancer. In addition to the tumor on her pancreas last year, she was previously treated for colorectal cancer in 1999 and pancreatic cancer in 2009. She also had lung surgery to remove cancerous growths in December 2018.
