2 killed in Air Force T-38 trainer jet crash in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (NewsNation Now) — An Air Force T-38 jet crashed near the Montgomery Regional Airport Friday, killing two people on board.

The United States Air Force released a statement saying the plane was a T-38 trainer aircraft assigned to the 14th Flying Training Wing at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi.

The crash occurred near Dannelly Field in Montgomery around 5:30 p.m. A safety investigation board will be investigating the incident, according to the Air Force.

The T-38 is a two-engine, high-altitude supersonic jet typically crewed with a student and instructor, according to the U.S. Air Force fact sheet on the aircraft.

The two onboard who perished in the crash have not been identified.

A spokesperson with the airport initially confirmed the crash and fatalities to NewsNation affiliate WIAT.
