CAMP HILL, Ala. (NewsNation Now) — An Auburn University student is making history after he was recently elected to serve as mayor of his hometown at the age of 21.
Messiah Williams-Cole beat out his opponent in the Camp Hill mayoral race in a runoff election. Once he’s sworn in on Nov. 2, he’ll become the youngest person to hold the office, News Nation affiliate WIAT reported.
The Auburn senior said he has a passion for the people in his hometown, which is about 60 miles northeast of Montgomery.
He said he plans to stay extra organized to keep up with all of his school and mayoral work.
Williams-Cole is on track to graduate in May 2021, with a degree in interdisciplinary studies. He’s an active member of the Sigma Delta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, and a volunteer with Tuskegee Public School’s Green Screen Team. He also works with the grant program Alabama Possible.
After graduating, Williams-Cole plans to attend either graduate or law school.
