TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Three people were arrested Sunday after they were caught trying to sell puppies out of a cart to beachgoers, according to Naples police.
Police were called to the beach after Ernest Augustin of Immokalee, Mariel Palominoca Campos and Yuniesky Campos Hartman, both of Cape Coral, were spotted pulling a cart with puppies hidden under a blanket, the Naples Police Department wrote in a social media post.
The six puppies were deprived of fresh air, according to the police department, and were overheating from the sweltering temperatures. A heat advisory was in effect at the time of the incident and the heat index was estimated at 110 degrees.
“Two of the dogs were observed with shallow breathing and were nearly unresponsive, appearing to be in distress due to heat related symptoms,” police said.
After about 20 minutes in an air conditioned car with water available, the puppies began to recover. Collier County Domesticated Animal Services checked them over to make sure they were healthy.
“During the investigation, it was apparent the suspects unnecessarily deprived the dogs of necessary sustenance or shelter in a cruel manner,” police said. “All suspects had the ability to stop, provide the dogs with water or shaded shelter, but none chose to do so.”
All three suspects were charged with cruelty to animals.
