TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A death investigation is underway after children made a frightening discovery while playing inside an abandoned home Thursday in Florida.
According to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, the children were inside the home on Memorial Drive in the city of Avon Park when they came across skeletal remains.
After the discovery, the children told a nearby adult who then called deputies.
The remains are believed to have been inside the home for well over a year and appears the person was using the home as a shelter, the sheriff’s office said.
Detectives are working to identify the remains, and the medical examiner will attempt to determine the cause of death.
