HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A toddler found in the middle of the road near Surfside Beach in the predawn hours on Sunday was safely returned to his mother thanks to the heroic efforts of an Horry County man.
Camryn Davis, 20, said he was driving on Glenns Bay Road toward Holmestown Road when he spotted the toddler wearing just a diaper.
“At first, I didn’t know what it was,” Davis said. “As I got closer, I realized it was a child.”
It was about 1 a.m. when Davis called 911 as he headed home from work with a friend. He was minutes from home when he spotted the child headed toward oncoming traffic.
That’s when he slammed on his brakes, pulled to the side of Glenns Bay Road and turned on his hazard lights.
“I asked him where he was going and then followed him a little bit,” Davis said.
Davis said he tried to flag down cars and stop traffic as he was calling for help.
According to Horry County police records, Davis is heard asking the toddler “Where’s your mom?” before the child smiled and took off down Garden Drive by the Deer Park Gardens townhomes.
“I like to think, I think to think, you know, hopefully, I made a difference in someone else’s day,” Davis said.
The police records indicate the child’s parents were located one street over thanks to car keys the child left behind. The mom told police her son was asleep next to her and wandered off when she fell asleep.
