Charleston, S.C. (NewsNation/WCBD) — A mom and her twin newborns are recovering at a South Carolina after both the mother and the twins tested positive for coronavirus. This is the first case in South Carolina of a baby contracting the virus in utero.

Brittany Arrington is an ER nurse who contracted COVID-19 just days before her twin daughters were born. The virus lead to a bleeding problem so her blood was very thin. The problem led to Arrington having an emergency cesarean section where her twins were delivered at 32 weeks.

Dr. Scott Sullivan, Vice Chairman of OBGYN at Medical University of South Carolina said this is one of the most complicated cases he has seen in more than 20 years in medicine.

“She would have died if it wasn’t for the quick action (and) the quick thinking of I mean probably 20 people,” Sullivan said about the mother.

Sulivan said the twin sisters, Emory and Emerson, have no known complications due to the virus.

“They’re stable but they need care and they’re going to be here for a while,” said Sullivan.

Their mother is also expected to make a full recovery. Their team of doctors hope to have the family reunited by Monday night or Tuesday morning.
