RIDGELAND, S.C. (WSAV) – A South Carolina elementary school teacher has been arrested for allegedly slapping a student, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).

Officials said that the incident happened on Oct. 9, when April Lowe, a first-grade teacher at Ridgeland Elementary School, allegedly slapped a 6-year-old student in the face as a form of discipline.

The JCSO said that they were called to the school after the incident and after they conducted a thorough investigation, Lowe was charged with Unlawful Conduct Towards a Child.

Lowe was arrested on Oct. 11 and transported to the Hampton County Detention Center without incident.

Officials said that Lowe is currently released on her own recognizance.

The incident is still under investigation.

Jasper County School District (JCSD) said that Lowe has been placed on administrative leave.

The JCSO said they want to assure the community that swift and appropriate action has been taken to address the situation, and they are working closely with school officials and the Jasper County School District to ensure that all students are provided with a safe and secure learning environment.

“Jasper County School District can confirm that law enforcement notified the District administration on October 11, 2024, of the arrest of April Lowe. Consistent with our practice in situations where an employee is arrested, Ms. Lowe has been placed on administrative leave. At this time, it would not be appropriate for the District to comment further because of the ongoing nature of the criminal investigation and personnel matter; however, we will continue to monitor this situation and take appropriate action based on the outcome of the investigation. In addition, we wish to make clear that the well-being and safety of children are top priorities of the District.

As to how the District will handle Ms. Lowe’s absence, in every decision the District and school makes, we strive to place the best interests of our students first. During the pendency of the investigation, the District has placed a substitute in the classroom who has previously served as a floater paraprofessional so this individual already knows many of the students she will be teaching.”
