1 officer killed, several injured in shooting on New Mexico interstate
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — A New Mexico State Police officer was shot and killed in a shooting Thursday on I-10 in Luna County, the department said in a tweet.
According to NMSP, multiple agencies are involved, and several officers are injured. The suspect is deceased, police said.
The NMSP says that there are two separate scenes in this investigation. The first scene on I-10 near Deming is where the NMSP officer was shot. The second scene on I-10 near Las Cruces is where the suspect was shot.
At this time, it’s unclear what led up to the shooting in Deming. However, a video posted on Instagram shows the shooting began when a white pickup truck was being pushed backward down I-10 by a single police unit. Several other units followed close behind.

The video then shows the suspect get out of the truck, walk straight up to the hood of the police cruiser and starts firing. In the video, you can hear at least a dozen shots exchanged between the suspect and police. After the gunshots stop, the video shows officers walk over to the suspect, and they appear to kick the gun away from the suspect.
NMSP tweeted that multiple agencies are involved but has not released any other information at this time.
Thursday afternoon, Gov. Lujan Grisham announced she will order all flags to half-staff in the state of New Mexico, beginning Friday, in mourning for the New Mexico State Police officer killed in the line of duty.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued the following statement:
“I am shocked, heartbroken and enraged by the loss of this public servant. I am praying for the local officer who was also shot and injured. We are still learning more about what happened and why, as law enforcement authorities continue to investigate, and we will all get the facts about what happened today. But what we know right now is a New Mexico law enforcement officer has been killed in the line of duty and I am horrified as we grieve another life cut down, another family crushed by senseless violence in our state. Violent crime is a scourge on New Mexico, and the men and women who step up and put on the badge to protect our communities fight it with everything they’ve got every day. We are and must remain grateful for their heroic service every single day – and moments like this remind us why. The New Mexico State Police put their lives on the line to help keep us safe. I join all New Mexico and the New Mexico State Police community in grieving this senseless, heinous loss.”
