PORTER, Texas (NewsNation Now) — A 3-year-old Texas boy has died after deputies say he accidentally shot himself in the chest during his birthday party, NewsNation affiliate KXAN reported.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said police responded to reports of a shooting Saturday at a home in Porter, which is roughly 25 miles outside of Houston.
Family and friends had gathered at the boy’s home to celebrate his birthday. The family told deputies that they were playing cards when a gunshot rang out, and the child was then located with a wound to his chest.
Investigators said the child found the pistol after it fell out of a family member’s pocket.
The child was immediately transported to a nearby fire station, where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office did not state whether the investigation is ongoing.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this tragic accident,” the sheriff’s office said.
