(NewsNation) — Storm chaser Kyle Cutten has claimed the effects of Hurricane Beryl feel vastly more severe than its current category one scaling.
Texas officials have issued preemptive disaster declarations for 121 counties, along with evacuation orders for some areas. The southern coast expecting a dangerous storm surge and flash flooding.
Cutten spoke to “Morning In America” from inside the eye of the storm in Matagorda, Texas, amid “100 mph winds.”
Having covered category four and five hurricanes in Louisiana and Florida, Cutten believes there was little to no difference with Beryl.
“I can just tell you as being on ground level, it felt every bit of a cat 3, 4, 5,” Cutten said. “Somewhere in that range.”
“I know it’s only a few miles an hour to separate them. I couldn’t walk and that’s only happened to me twice before; both in a four and a five.”
Beryl has also caused power outages in more than 1 million homes and businesses, per CenterPoint Energy in Houston, after making landfall early Monday.
“I’m seeing, just incredible winds that are just shredding roofs on small build homes,” Cutten said. “We’ve got power lines down, we’ve seen dozens of power flashes and we’ve got trees down… heavy flooding and surging on the coastal side.
“I’m absolutely scared for what’s coming ahead for the United States of America. This I have never seen anything like this on the letter B.”
