AUSTIN, Texas (NewsNation Now) — A school district in Austin is doubling its fleet of buses equipped with Wi–Fi hotspots in an effort to expand free internet access to students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Austin Independent School District announced the plans Monday, ahead of the start of the 2020-2021 school year, NewsNation affiliate KXAN reported. Classes returned Tuesday, and the district’s reopening plans require the first four weeks of learning to be online only.
With many families lacking reliable internet access at home, the district initially deployed 110 Wi-Fi-enabled buses in April. AISD obtained the hotspots through a more than $600,000 grant with wireless provider Kajeet.
The district released plans this week to park 261 buses in neighborhoods and by apartment complexes around the city. The buses will be located “where they can make the biggest impact,” school officials said.
The buses are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Oct. 5, the district said.
