Texas GOP platform proposals: Bible in schools, no property tax
- 6,700 Texas Republicans gathered for state convention
- Topics among discussion: Border, religion, gender-affirming care
- Democrats 'offer different path' for voters against GOP 'extremism'
SAN ANTONIO (NewsNation) — Teaching the Bible in public schools, abolishing property taxes and banning gender-affirming care for adults between the ages of 18 and 26 are among proposals that Texas state GOP members want to include in their party’s official platform.
More than 6,700 of Texas’ most active Republicans gathered this weekend in San Antonio for the Republican Party of Texas state convention.
The goals of the convention included establishing the official party platform, electing a new chair in a hotly-contested race and organizing for the general election.
Texas GOP proposals
The party’s proposals were discussed over the weekend at the state’s biennial GOP convention. Beyond the three previously mentioned, several notable proposals continue to encourage the state legislature to create a border protection unit.
The border protection unit would be a state police force specifically dedicated to detaining people suspected of crossing the border illegally. However, this proposal failed to pass last session after immigration advocates raised concerns.
Texas GOP legislators also called on U.S. Congress to disclose all the information it has received on unidentified anamolous phenomena (UAPs).
Republicans also want to reserve the right for Texas to secede from the United States. This proposal was originally included in the platform two years ago.
Democrats fire back
Texas Democrats criticized the policy proposals in a statement:
“The people of Texas have a choice: Whether they’re going to continue to go along with that extremism or whether they’re going to take a different path. We offer that different path,” Texas state Rep. Joaquin Castro said.
The Texas GOP also approved a resolution pledging full support for former President Donald Trump in his 2024 bid for the White House.
The latest polling from the Texas Politics Project shows Trump leading President Joe Biden by nine points in the Lone Star State.
