PHOENIX (AP) — Police arrested a teenage boy and are still seeking another suspect after two Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers were fired at while sitting in an unmarked vehicle Thursday.
DPS officials said the troopers both escaped injury.
The name of the 17-year-old suspect in custody wasn’t immediately released.
According to DPS Capt. Jesse Galvez, the two uniformed troopers were in their vehicle about 9 a.m. Thursday in support of a nearby operation when a silver passenger car stopped nearby.
The driver honked the horn as a passenger got out and started firing an assault rifle, Galvez said.
He said the troopers were able to exit their vehicle safely and return fire.
It’s unclear how many shots were fired in the incident.
The driver of the suspect vehicle sped from the scene, leaving the teenage passenger behind, and DPS officials said he was quickly taken into custody and the weapon was recovered.
Authorities were searching for the driver of the suspect vehicle which reportedly has custom wheels, a temporary license plate and what appears to be chipped paint below the license plate area.
