Police ID woman killed after car crashed into Texas emergency room

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person died and five others were injured after a car crashed into the St. David’s North Austin Medical Center emergency room in Texas on Tuesday evening, according to first responders.

The person who died has been identified as 57-year-old Michelle Holloway, who was the driver of the vehicle. Austin police said a preliminary investigation showed there was no indication the incident was an intentional act or a medical episode.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Holloway was an employee with the Driver License Division at DPS.

Police were not able to provide an update on the medical status of the two children who were injured during the crash.

According to a spokesperson with St. David’s, three team members received minor injuries from the incident.

Officials hold media briefing on deadly crash

APD, Austin-Travis County EMS, the Austin Fire Department and the chief medical officer for St. David’s North Austin were in attendance. Two media briefings were held related to the incident.

Four of those injured people were taken to other medical facilities to be treated for their injuries, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.

Eight other people were being cared for at the emergency room at the time of the crash. Officials said five of those people were moved to other facilities.

Photos sent to NewsNation affiliate KXAN through ReportIt show a sedan completely inside the building near an emergency room entrance.

ATCEMS said three people–one adult and two children–were taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center. One child was considered to be in critical condition. Another adult and child are being treated for “non-life-threatening injuries.”

One adult was taken to Round Rock Medical Center and was considered to be in critical condition, ATCEMS said.

The Austin Fire Department said the call came in around 5:36 p.m. AFD said a hazmat task force responded to the crash.

Leaders react to crash

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said on social media he’s spoken with Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, offering the state’s support following the crash.

“I’ve spoken with Mayor Watson about the tragic accident at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center & offered Texas’ full support. State personnel are working closely with local officials to ensure Austin has no unmet needs. Cecilia & I pray for the victims & their loved ones,” Abbott wrote.

Mayor Pro Tem Leslie Pool, who represents the district where the hospital is located, provided a statement to KXAN.

“I am grateful to our incredible first responders, who responded quickly to manage the scene, and who are assisting hospital staff in securing the scene, and redirecting patients to other facilities. I am staying connected to our communications and emergency personnel as the situation evolves,” Pool said.
