KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson will be making history at the AFC Championship on Sunday.

This will be the first AFC Championship in NFL history featuring two starting Black quarterbacks.

Mahomes already was a part of Black history last year when he and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts played in the first Super Bowl with two starting Black QBs.

Ahead of Sunday’s matchup, the Baltimore Ravens signal caller paid his homage by saying he doesn’t want to face Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I don’t like competing against him at all,” Jackson said with a laugh Wednesday. “He’s a great quarterback, definitely a Hall of Famer. It’s a no-brainer.”

This is also the first playoff game with two former MVPs under the age of 30.

“Two greats, up-and-coming greats just going toe to toe like a heavyweight fight,” Jackson said.

“I’ve admired watching him from afar,” Mahomes said. “It’s going to be a great challenge for us every time we go against him.”

Mahomes echoed similar sentiments, noting the odds of Jackson being this year’s NFL MVP.

“He’s going to be the MVP for a reason,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “He goes out there. He leads his team. He scores, he runs, he throws. He does whatever it takes to win, and that’s what the greats do.”

This season, Jackson has thrown for 3,678 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He’s also rushed for 821 yards and five touchdowns while leading the Ravens to the No. 1 seed and the AFC Championship.

Mahomes has thrown for 4,183 yards, 27 TDs and 14 interceptions while rushing for 389 yards. It’s been an up-and-down offensive season, but Kansas City still obtained the No. 3 seed and won its first playoff game on the road for this Mahomes-led team.

The Chiefs’ defense has proven itself to be among the best in the NFL but will have its hands full with Jackson and Baltimore’s group of weapons like rookie wideout Zay Flowers, veteran Odell Beckham Jr. and tight end Isaiah Likely.

“You can see how he’s developed as a passer,” Mahomes said.

“He continues to get better and better every single year. I knew we were gonna play a lot of games like this as our careers gone on, and I’m sure this will be the first of many.”
