Browns legend Bernie Kosar confirms he needs liver transplant
CLEVELAND (WJW) – Browns legend Bernie Kosar is sharing the news that he needs a liver transplant and is showing early signs of Parkinson’s disease.
Kosar confirmed to NewsNation affiliate WJW that he has cirrhosis of the liver.
According to an article in Cleveland magazine, his doctors said there is a 90% chance he’ll need a transplant.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, cirrhosis of the liver is late-stage liver disease. It is a result of chronic hepatitis, which is inflammation in the liver. This inflammation causes healthy liver tissue to be gradually replaced with scar tissue.
“When inflammation is ongoing, your liver attempts to repair itself by scarring. But too much scar tissue prevents your liver from working properly. The end stage is chronic liver failure,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Kosar said an independent NFL doctor diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease back in February.
In Cleveland Magazine, Kosar said he is being upbeat about the prognosis.
