DENVER (KDVR) – There isn’t a mercy rule in baseball, but some fans think there should be after the Colorado Rockies lost 16-1 in the team’s season opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Thursday’s game was close, until the third inning when the D-backs tallied 14 runs and it took the Rockies 34 minutes to collect three outs.

The loss broke records in the franchise and the entire league.

Not only was it the Rockies’ worst opening-day game in history, but the 14 runs were the most in an inning on opening day for any team since 1900.

Social media users aren’t letting this loss slide, especially after the Rockies broke the franchise record for the most losses in one season last year.

X users ask for a mercy rule – only for the Rockies

One X user is calling it the “Rockies rule.”

“MLB shouldn’t wait. no questions asked, tonight, introduce the Rockies Rule. if a divisional opponent bats around twice in one inning on opening day after your worst season record ever, team ownership is immediately forfeit and the franchise is put up for auction,” one person tweeted.

“Mercy rule in MLB, NOW. (only for Rockies),” another person tweeted.

“is there a run rule in the @MLB asking for the @Rockies,” another tweeted.

#Rockies pitchers might actually bring a run rule to MLB,” tweeted one user.

Meanwhile, #SellTheTeamDick has been another common hashtag on X, referencing Rockies owner and CEO Dick Monfort.

“Meet the new @Rockies….same as the old @Rockies Maybe the mercy rule can be used since we’re still in the 3rd inning? #SellTheTeamDick” was one tweet among the popular hashtag.

Other users just said it was a hard game to watch – in one way or another.

“Putting the Rockies on TV has to violate some kind of @FCC rule,” one person tweeted.

While the Rockies broke potentially the worst record, there’s still time for the team to turn it around. The season just kicked off, and the Rockies have 161 games left to break its losing-season streak.
