Gymnast Gabby Douglas ends bid for third Olympics
(NEXSTAR) – Gabby Douglas will not add to her impressive career medal count this summer at the Paris Olympics. The 2012 all-around winner is ending her bid to earn a spot on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team after withdrawing from the USA Gymnastics Championships on Wednesday.
Douglas, 28, previously helped lead the U.S. to gold in the team competition at the 2016 Olympics. She had returned from an 8-year layoff at the American Classic last month and made her first appearance at a major U.S. meet at the U.S. Classic in Hartford, Connecticut, two weeks ago.
At the U.S. Championships, Douglas fell twice on the uneven bars, finishing her routine while the crowd chanted her name, according to the Associated Press. She withdrew from the remainder of the meet, citing an ankle injury.
Douglas qualified to compete in three events, but did not meet the minimum score standard to compete in the all-around, according to the AP. That limitation made her bid to earn a spot on the team a long shot.
Douglas, the first Black woman to win the Olympic title, earned three total medals as part of Team USA.
