TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A 65-year-old man is lucky to be alive after falling into an icy pond in Michigan last week, and he has a quick-thinking officer — and his own dog — to thank.
According to Michigan State Police, around 11:45 a.m. Thursday, bystanders called 911 after seeing the man fall through the ice at Arbutus Lake.
When authorities arrived, Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officer Kammeron Bennetts quickly grabbed a rescue disc tethered to a rope, but he couldn’t reach the man due to the icy conditions.
The man’s dog Ruby, however, was able to help.
The quick-thinking officer told the owner to send his dog over: “Send your pup here. Will she come to me?”
In footage from the incident, the man can be heard telling the officer his dog’s name.
“Ruby, come here!” Bennetts can be heard calling out to the dog. “Come here, Ruby!”
Tail wagging, Ruby runs to the officer, who then attaches the rescue disc to the dog’s collar and tells the owner to call his dog back.
Ruby ran back to her owner, and the man was able to grab the disc.
Officers instructed the man to kick his legs, and officials were eventually able to pull him to safety. He was in the water for about 16 minutes.
The man was taken to a nearby medical center for treatment and was later released.
“Great teamwork and well done!” the department said.
State police cheered the “amazing rescue” in a posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, calling Ruby “a good girl!!!”
“Creative thinking helped save a life!! EXCELLENT JOB MCO Bennetts and RUBY!!” the state police wrote in the tweet. “Great team work and well done!”
