LODI, Calif. (NewsNation) — Body camera footage captured a police officer in Northern California rescuing a man in a wheelchair from an oncoming train on Wednesday.
The Lodi Police Department said Officer Erika Urrea spotted the 66-year-old man who appeared to be stuck on railroad tracks as a train quickly approached Wednesday morning. Body camera video shows Urrea exiting her patrol vehicle and running toward the man, pulling him onto the ground away from the tracks seconds before the train arrived.
The train narrowly missed the man, and crashed into his wheelchair, NewsNation affiliate KTXL reported.
The man suffered a leg injury, the department said in a statement on Facebook. Urrea and an officer who arrived to assist treated the man at the scene, and he was later taken to a local hospital.
“Officer Urrea risked her own life to save another and her actions prevented a tragedy today,” the department wrote. “We are extremely proud of Officer Erika Urrea and her heroism.”
No other details about the rescue or the man’s injury are known at this time.
