DENVER (KDVR) — A moose was caught on camera at a newly opened area of Steamboat Ski Resort on Saturday.

No one was injured and there were no incidents, according to the resort. However, one trail was closed as a result of the moose spotting.

Chris Scahel, who took the video, said the mother moose was protecting a calf, who was seen on the trail in the Mahogony Ridge area of the resort.

The area was opened for the first time this season, having previously been out-of-bounds.

Multiple people were seen in the video, and Scahel said everyone was trying to stay as far away as possible from the moose, who at one point was seen pacing in front of the trees.

Ski patrol was contacted immediately, and Scahel said he ended up climbing uphill with his skis to try and get around the moose at a safe distance.

Steamboat Ski Resort said it’s common for people to see wildlife on the resort, and that it works closely with the U.S. Forest Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. It also said ski patrol closes or detours ski trails as needed for moose activity and to limit interactions with guests.

The resort said CPW was made aware of the moose encounter.
