PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – As artificial intelligence grows in popularity and makes its way into the workforce, lawmakers are seeking protections for workers whose employment may soon be decided by algorithms.

Oregon Rep. Suzanne Bonamici introduced the No Robot Bosses Act, which targets AI-based discrimination in hiring tools used for automated job application systems.

“Artificial intelligence has great potential, but we must address the potential for bias in its algorithms,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “This is especially important for hiring tools because we’ve already seen examples of how systemic biases in AI tools have limited opportunities, especially for people from underserved and marginalized backgrounds.”

The legislation will also require employers to train those who use these algorithm-driven systems and disclose how they are used. Employers also can’t rely exclusively on these systems in their decision-making processes.

This is the first piece of legislation Bonamici has introduced since joining the House of Representatives’ new bipartisan AI taskforce, which focuses on legislation relating to how the new technology fits into the current technological sphere.

When the taskforce was first announced, Bonamici shared the following statement:

“Artificial Intelligence has tremendous potential to improve lives, but that potential also poses significant risks that must not be ignored. Deepfake robocalls, algorithmic bias, and risks to data privacy and integrity exemplify the urgent need for guardrails in this rapidly growing field. Additionally, we must consider the effects that AI could have on jobs and the workforce and on energy use. I’m honored to serve on this bipartisan AI taskforce and look forward to working with my colleagues to promote the responsible and ethical development and use of AI.”
