(NewsNation) — A shelter-in-place order at University of California Berkeley was lifted Thursday afternoon, after an hours-long investigation of what police called a “credible threat.”

According to campus police, buildings will remain locked and in-person classes were canceled for the day.

University of California Berkeley police tweeted at about 9:30 a.m. local time that a shelter-in-place order was in effect as police searched for a person who “may want to harm specific individuals.”

There was not an active shooter, according to a UC Berkeley Police Department tweet.

Campus police originally tweeted that an emergency occurred near campus and officers encouraged people to stay inside and move away from doors and windows. Those not on campus were told to stay away from the area.

By 2 p.m., the situation was resolved and the shelter-in-place order was lifted, according to a separate UC Berkeley Police Department tweet.

Several Berkeley Unified School District Schools also were placed on soft lockdown as a result of the investigation, according to a statement from Superintendent Brent Stephens.

“Staff have been alerted and administrators will be vigilant throughout the day,” Stephens wrote in a statement that was posted to the district website at the time. “We have also updated all BUSD principals and will continue to be in communication with our principals as the situation evolves.”

Neither police nor school officials have released additional information, including what prompted the investigation.

UC Berkeley is located in the East Bay area is reported about 44,000 enrolled students for the 2021-22 school year.
