SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — David Sherwood first began selling vinyl records at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when he said he had 15,000 records sitting at home.
It started with him holding live auctions on Facebook to sell vinyl records during the pandemic, but it didn’t stop there.
“Over the past four years, it’s grown and expanded to the point where we now needed our physical record store,” Sherwood told NewsNation affiliate KTVX.
Now, Sherwood is celebrating two major accomplishments: The grand opening of his brick-and-mortar record store (called Daybreak Records, located in Sandy), and a submission to the Guinness Book of World Records for visiting the most record stores in a day.
“Records, to me, embody this kind of nostalgic factor,” Sherwood said. “The reason I love records is ’cause it’s tied to a time and a memory.”
Before the opening of the physical location, Sherwood and his team flew to Los Angeles to research other record stores and see what they were missing.
“While we were doing that, we had the idea, ‘What if we break a Guinness World Record while we’re doing that?'” Sherwood said.
Sherwood said he hired a driver, mapped out the “perfect route,” and tried to go to as many record stores as possible.
He was able to make it to 28 stores in 24 hours, making it to the last store around midnight.
Sherwood told KTVX that he wanted to hold a world record ever since he was a kid, but breaking a record was a little more work than he first thought. He said he had to submit paperwork, have a log book signed at each store, and buy a record while he was there.
“With any luck, they’ll send us a beautiful, like, plaque that we can hang on the wall in a few weeks,” Sherwood said.
Along with selling records — and holding a world record — Sherwood said his team wanted the business to do some good for the community. Sherwood said his team typically holds two charity auctions for Primary Children’s Hospital each year to try and raise as much money for the hospital as possible.
Inside Daybreak Records, Sherwood said there is a classic 1964 jukebox, and any money that goes into the jukebox will be donated to the hospital.
The grand opening
Daybreak Records — which will sell a variety of classic records, as well as some new releases — is holding its grand opening on Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Sherwood said the record store has partnered with RC Willey for its grand opening giveaway, and he said there will be more than $1,000 worth of items for the giveaway.
Some of the items available during the giveaway include a 65-inch TV, some Bose headphones, and a couple of record players.
Daybreak Records is located at 9445 S Union Square STE A, Sandy, UT 84070.
