Viral disease outbreak leads to several horses being euthanized at Los Alamitos
(KTLA) — An outbreak of a potentially fatal viral disease at Los Alamitos Race Course has led to seven race horses being euthanized, officials have confirmed.
Announced in an advisory on Thursday, the California Horse Racing Board said it was notified of an outbreak of Equine Infectious Anemia on Sept. 24 at Los Alamitos. The first infected horse, a Quarter Horse, was euthanized on that day.
An additional nine were quarantined after the initial diagnosis. Six of those horses then tested positive for EIA on Oct. 2 and 3, and they were euthanized.
The seven horses were identified as:
- Bullet Train V
- Opt In
- El Vencedor V
- Amore For A Reason
- Goodtyme
- Assaultt
- The Marksman V
The other three horses that were quarantined will remain in isolation and will be tested again in 60 days.
According to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, EIA is an “infectious and potentially fatal viral disease of horses.” No cure or treatment for the disease exists and it’s typically transmitted from horse-to-horse via biting insects like horseflies.
Symptoms include fever, weight loss, icterus (yellowing of body tissues), anemia, swelling in the limbs and weakness, according to the APHIS.
