(NewsNation) — Michelle Root’s daughter Sarah was only 21 when she was killed eight years ago by a drunk driver in Omaha, Nebraska. He was an illegal immigrant from Honduras who disappeared after being released on bond.

Root joined NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas to discuss her family’s efforts for stronger immigration laws.

“What I want people to realize, Sarah’s death happened eight years ago, and now we’re hearing another high-profile one, Miss Riley. These happen all the time,” Root said during an appearance on “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.

‘Sarah’s Law’ would allow the government to arrest illegal immigrants.

Police said Edwin Mejia had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit. He was going 35 miles per hour over the speed limit when he rear-ended Sarah’s car. She was out celebrating her college graduation when she was struck.

“Sarah’s Law” has been introduced to Congress seven times, and Root says there may be an update on the legislation Thursday.
