‘Our streets are in crisis’: Jail time down in Oregon, but overdose deaths skyrocket | On Balance
The first state in the U.S. to decriminalize drug possession appears to be having a change of heart. In 2020, drug possession became the equivalent of a parking ticket in Oregon, and new polling shows 56% of voters now want the law overturned. The CDC reports overdoses in the state have jumped 61% compared to 13% nationally. “On Balance” host Leland Vittert says the people the law was supposed to help stay out of jail are out of jail, but more of them are ending up in the morgue. Mike Marshall, co-founder of Oregon Recovers, joins Vittert to discuss.
