East Tennesseans rally to help Helene flooding victims
NEWPORT, Tenn. (WATE) — Many people in East Tennessee are making a big difference by helping those impacted by Helene.
Dean Pressley and Missie Cantrell made the 45 minute drive from Sevierville to Newport to drop of cases and cases of bottled water.
“We just love helping people out and stuff. I volunteered with Seymour Volunteer Fire Department for many years. I’m not active now, but still want to do what I can to help our neighbors and everything,” Dean Pressley said. “We were watching the news today and the good Lord told me and her that we need to do something to help.”
Cantrell, Pressley, and his friend Mike Doyle were able to donate nearly 70 cases of bottled water. It took trips to multiple stores to get their donation ready.
“Kroger, Food City, of course there was no limit on the water at that time and stuff,” Pressley said. “They were glad to help. While I was standing in line at Kroger, there was a lady, I think her name was Denise, and she asked what it was for, ‘I said I was taking it to Newport.’ She said ‘can I help you?’ She bought half of that buggy.”
Cantrell said she is happy she can help those in need.
“Overwhelming. I went through the wildfire in 2016 in Sevier County and it’s overwhelming,” Cantrell said. “I’m glad to be able to help.”
Both Cantrell and Pressley want the people of Cocke County in Tennessee to know, they are not alone.
“They’ve got a lot of neighbors in other counties that are praying for them and doing everything that we can with our family and neighbors in our area to come out of our area and help others in need,” Cantrell said. “I think that’s what the world’s all about.”
On Monday alone, thousands of bottles of water were handed out to those who are in need.
