(NewsNation) —  Tropical Storm Kirk will likely become a hurricane later Tuesday, eventually developing into a “large and formidable” force, according to the National Hurricane Center forecast.

The storm leaves little time for the public to readjust after Hurricane Helene, although there was no indication Tuesday morning that Kirk would deliver another hurricane to the region.

Helene killed at least 130 people as the Category 4 hurricane tore through more than 500 miles between the Florida coast and Tennessee.

Rescue crews were still searching Tuesday for people who went missing during the storm. Millions remain without power.

How serious is Kirk?

In the wake of Helene’s devastation, forecasters are tracking Kirk as it moves through the mid-Atlantic Ocean.

It’s expected to strengthen into a hurricane Tuesday night and a major hurricane (Category 3 or stronger) within the following days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The agency is monitoring two additional areas. One, in the West Caribbean has a 40% chance of forming a tropical depression in the next seven days, while another — A91L — has a 90% chance.

Where is Tropical Storm Kirk?

The storm was about 1,010 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands Tuesday, with the strongest winds coming in at about 70 mph.

Current models don’t show Kirk heading toward the United States. However, conditions that produce rainfall, flooding, and other severe weather could still develop.

Downpours are possible near the western Caribbean and southern Gulf of Mexico, AccuWeather reported.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect Tuesday morning.
