AZMARIN, Syria (NewsNation) — More than 1,900 people have died after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southern Turkey and northern Syria in the early-morning hours on Monday.

The quake sent strong ripples across the two countries, toppling hundreds of buildings and burying thousands beneath the rubble. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under debris, and the death toll was expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.

Major aftershocks continued to rattle the region even after the initial wave.

Rescue workers and residents in multiple cities searched for survivors, working through tangles of metal and concrete. A hospital in Turkey collapsed, and patients, including newborns, were evacuated from facilities in Syria.

The U.S., European Union, NATO and dozens of other countries have offered to send aid and search teams as soon as possible, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan tweeted. He said this is the county’s largest disaster since 1939, when another earthquake killed as many as 33,000 people.
