(NewsNation) — The CIA has released a Russian-language video to try and persuade Russian intelligence employees to switch sides and work as double agents for the U.S.
CIA Director William J. Burns says the war in Ukraine creates a generational opportunity to leverage videos like this, one the intelligence agency will not miss out on. He added that a previous similar video got 2.5 million views.
The video, posted to X and Telegram, starts in the home of a middle-aged Russian who works for the country’s intelligence service. He says he is a patriot but has become disaffected with what he calls the well-connected elite running his country while Russian soldiers are eating rotten potatoes and using old military equipment.
According to the YouTube translation of the video, one line reads, “The true enemy of Russia is within itself. The very top sold the country for palaces and yachts.”
The scene wraps up with the Russian intelligence officer going into a snowy courtyard, pulling out his smartphone and deciding to contact the CIA.
A CIA spokesperson told NewsNation, “If it weren’t working, we wouldn’t be on video No. 3.”
The Kremlin has rejected this as false corruption allegations and shrugged off the CIA video.
“You know, this practice is quite common, intelligence agencies around the world very often use the media and social networks to recruit new employees. And they do it all the time, the CIA does it every year,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.
Peskov suggested the CIA was wasting its time by trying to reach Russians on X, which is banned in Russia and can only be accessed by a virtual private network. Facebook is also blocked in Russia.
“Somebody needs to tell the CIA that in our country (Russian social network) VKontakte is much more popular than the banned X. And that VKontakte’s audience is much larger,” Peskov said.
