☀ August 25: Laura heads toward Gulf, first lady to speak at RNC, finding an organ donor’s family two decades later
Good morning! It’s Tuesday, August 25, 2020. Here’s a look at your news across the nation:
1️⃣🌀 Laura is expected to make landfall as a “major hurricane,” according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm was 680 miles southeast of Lake Charles, Louisiana, as of 4 a.m. (CT). While it’s currently a tropical storm, the NHC forecasts it will strengthen rapidly over the next 48 hours. Why it matters: Forecasters said there is a risk of a life-threatening storm surge from San Luis Pass, Texas to Ocean Springs, Mississippi over the next 48 hours.
2️⃣🔥 All over the West, unhealthy air is a concern due to hundreds of wildfires, along with extreme heat, shifting winds and coronavirus. The danger from microparticles is present even when the air may seem clear, Dr. Reza Ronaghi, a pulmonary expert at UCLA Medical Center, told NewsNation. Why it matters: Prolonged exposure to microparticles can lead to persistent coughing, vision problems and they can even trigger a heart attack or stroke.
3️⃣🚨 Protesters clashed with police in Kenosha, one night after amateur video showed an officer shooting a Black man several times in the back at close range. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers called out 125 members of the National Guard on Monday after protesters set cars on fire, smashed windows and clashed with officers in riot gear the previous night. Why it matters: Kenosha is the latest city experiencing unrest and racial protests with law enforcement.
4️⃣🗳 First Lady Melania Trump is on the schedule to speak on the second night of the Republican National Convention. On Monday, a St. Louis couple arrested after pointing guns at Black Lives Matter protesters marching past their home, former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and President Donald Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr. were among the speakers. Why it matters: Republicans will spend the week trying to convince the American people that the president deserves a second term.
On the other side, Democratic nominee Joe Biden made no public appearance on Monday.

🏥🩺 More than 20 years after a transplant that saved his life, a Florida man is on a mission to say “thank you” to his donor’s family.
Joey Parrish got a second chance at life with a liver transplant. He was never able to connect with the donor family who chose to help him. He wrote them a letter through the donor service but never heard back.
Parrish was given very limited information about his donor. All he knows is that the liver came from a 4-year-old child from New York state and that his transplant took place on August 21, 1999.
Even if he never hears from them, he told NewsNatioon that he hopes the family will see his story on the news or social media, and know they have changed his life forever.
