☀ August 24: Unrest in Wisconsin, RNC kicks off, 4-year-old cleans up storm damage
Good morning! It’s Monday, August 24, 2020. Here’s a look at your news across the nation:
1️⃣🚨 Social media videos showed unrest Monday morning at the scene of a police shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin after a social media video appeared to show officers shoot at a man’s back seven times as he leaned into a vehicle. The man in the video, who was identified as Jacob Blake by Gov. Tony Evers (D-Wis.), was hospitalized Tuesday night in serious condition, according to Kenosha Police. Why it matters: The video appeared to capture seven shots, though it was unclear if more than one officer fired.
2️⃣🌀 Two tropical storms are expected to impact the Gulf of Mexico region this week. Tropical Storm Marco approached Louisiana for an expected landfall around midday Monday, while Tropical Storm Laura was forecast to move along Cuba’s southern coast during the day before entering the Gulf of Mexico. Why it matters: Tropical Storm Laura is forecasted to head toward the same stretch of U.S. coast as Marco later in the week, most likely as a hurricane.
3️⃣🔥 Three massive wildfires raged through the Northern California landscape over the weekend as firefighters raced to dig breaks and make other preparations ahead of challenging weather. In the Santa Cruz Mountains, south of San Francisco, authorities announced the discovery of the body of a 70-year-old man in a remote area called Last Chance on Sunday. Why it matters: He was the seventh fire victim in the state in the last week. Nearly a quarter-million people are under evacuation orders and warnings.
4️⃣ 🗳 Republicans are expected to formally nominate President Donald Trump for reelection at a scaled-down kickoff in Charlotte that begins the weeklong Republican National Convention. Delegates will hold an in-person roll-call vote in a ballroom at the Charlotte Convention Center before attention turns to prime-time programming. Why it matters: Like the Democratic National Convention last week, the RNC’s roll call will be different than usual. Just 336 delegates have been invited to cast proxy votes on behalf of the more than 2,500 regular delegates.
