Border bill: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to bring up a bipartisan border security deal for a vote this week, reigniting an effort that failed earlier this year. The legislation overhauls asylum laws, hires thousands of new border agents, invests in technology to stop fentanyl trafficking and gives the president new authorities to restrict border crossings. Read more >
Zoom in: In a letter sent Sunday to Democratic Senate offices, Schumer acknowledged the bill will likely fail again but said it gives Democrats a chance to show they are trying to secure the border. “I will be honest: I do not expect all Democrats to support this legislation,” Schumer wrote. “But that is often how bipartisan legislation must be shaped when dealing with an issue as complex and politically charged as our nation’s immigration laws.” The bill previously stalled after former President Donald Trump urged congressional Republicans to oppose it. Full breakdown >
Opposition: The revived bill faces an uphill path with some Republican lawmakers still firmly opposed. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday” that additional legislation isn’t necessary. Watch the interview >

What’s going on: The number of women joining Mexico’s cartels has risen in recent years, according to a new study. Children are also being recruited, according to a separate study. “Male crime bosses tend to value women for their perceived competence, respect for hierarchy and ability to evade police attention,” says the report by the International Crisis Group. The report says the proportion of women charged with organized crime-related offenses rose from 5.4% in 2017 to 7.5% in 2021. A recent report from The Borgen Project claims 350,000 children have been recruited by Mexican criminal organizations. Why a private investigator says cartel members don’t often look like “bad guys” >
‘Stash houses’: An effort by Texas state troopers to find migrant “stash houses” has produced big numbers in three years, with nearly 500 houses containing about 5,000 people discovered. Drug cartels and gangs have taken over motels, buildings and homes, where people evading Border Patrol capture will stay for a few days or weeks until they move on to other places. Why a Texas Department of Public Safety lieutenant says the “gotaways” remain a huge concern >

‘I’m disgusted’: Sean “Diddy” Combs admitted to beating his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a hotel hallway in 2016 after CNN released video of the attack, saying he was “truly sorry” for his “inexcusable” actions. “I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now,” the music mogul said Sunday. Breakdown >
Diddy assault video: In the video, Combs is seen running in a towel after Ventura who is seen standing in front of an elevator bank. He aggressively grabs and drags her down and then kicks her before picking up her luggage. He is then seen dragging her on the floor back to a hotel room as she braces her head. The footage matches the description of a physical altercation Ventura detailed in her now-settled lawsuit against Combs. More legal action and a federal investigation that led authorities to raid Combs’ mansions in Los Angeles and Miami followed the lawsuit. Timeline of key events >
Could Diddy be charged after video? Despite finding the video “disturbing and difficult to watch,” the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office stressed it would be unable to charge Diddy in the incident because it “occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted.” This comes after prominent victims’ rights attorney Gloria Allred said the leaked surveillance video could potentially lead to federal racketeering charges against him if it provides evidence of sex crimes like trafficking. What’s happening: Former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial appears to be heading into its final stretch. The prosecution’s star witness, Michael Cohen, will return to the stand Monday for more grilling before Trump’s lawyers present their case. If Trump’s defense team calls any witnesses, their case is expected to be short. The most significant question remaining is whether Trump himself will take the stand. What to know about the trial >
