Wildfire: Firefighters battling Los Angeles County’s first major wildfire of the year are facing steep terrain, sweltering conditions and strong winds. The blaze, dubbed the Post Fire, forced campers, off-roaders and hikers to evacuate California’s Hungry Valley recreation area over the weekend, and was just 2% contained Sunday evening. As strong winds push the flames through dry brush in the mountains along Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles, officials have warned residents in the area to be prepared to leave if the size of the fire grows. Missing tourist found dead: A missing American tourist has been found dead on a fairly remote beach on the small Greek island of Mathraki, local media reported. The victim, whose name or hometown have not been released, was reported missing Thursday by a Greek-American friend. The tourist had last been seen Tuesday at a cafe with two female tourists who left the island. The latest >
3 missing tourists: In the Cyclades, a group of Greek islands, three tourists are missing. Two French tourists, ages 64 and 73, were reported missing after leaving their respective hotels to meet. Authorities are also still searching for retired Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Albert Calibet of Hermosa Beach, California. He went on a solo hike in hot conditions and has not been seen since. Evan Gershkovich trial: The espionage trial in Russia of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich will start on June 26. The trial will be held behind closed doors. Gershkovich has been behind bars since his March 2023 arrest and faces 20 years in prison if convicted. The latest >
Allegations: Gershkovich, 32, is accused of “gathering secret information” on orders from the CIA about Uralvagonzavod, a facility that produces and repairs military equipment, the Prosecutor General’s office said. Gershkovich, his employer and the U.S. government have all denied the allegations against him. U.S. officials have designated the reporter as wrongfully detained. Wall Street Journal deputy editor Paul Beckett told NewsNation that Gershkovich is likely to be found guilty at trial. “Given the nature of the system, if he goes to trial, we expect him to be convicted. It’s as simple as that,” Beckett said. “Obviously the charges are bogus.” Watch the interview >

Veteran dies from overdose: Nearly a year after her daughter’s death, the mother of a U.S. Army soldier who died from an accidental overdose after taking a pain pill laced with fentanyl is demanding the military provide her granddaughters with owed survivor benefits. Shannon Laudermilk told NewsNation the military failed to properly treat her daughter Holly Eakins’ pain following a serious knee injury and would not approve her for surgery due to bureaucratic red tape. “Instead of giving her appropriate pain medication, she was given the idea of just taking Tylenol,” Laudermilk said. “She was in so much pain that she finally just thought (to have) pain medication off the street because she couldn’t get it elsewhere and she couldn’t get the surgery.” Watch the interview >
‘Holding up the benefits’: Laudermilk said the Army has not provided her with a report needed to allow her granddaughters, ages 5 and 3, to receive benefits like health care coverage from the Veterans Affairs Department. “All this is doing is holding up the benefits from the VA for my grandchildren,” she said. Military overdoses: Eakins, whose death was ruled accidental, is among 330 U.S. service members who died from overdoses between 2016 and 2021 amid the nation’s opioid epidemic, according to Pentagon data. Studies show opioid prescriptions quadrupled among veterans from 2001 to 2009. Read more >

Presidential debate: With the first presidential debate of the 2024 election right around the corner, CNN announced that the campaigns of both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have agreed to new debate rules. Both candidates agreed to appear at a uniform podium and have microphones muted throughout the debate except when it’s a candidate’s turn to speak. The debate is set for June 27 in Atlanta. Splash pad shooting: Authorities identified the man who opened fire at a splash pad in suburban Detroit on Saturday before taking his own life. The 42-year-old shooter’s motive remains unknown as investigators work to determine if he left behind any hint of his plans. Nine people were injured in the shooting, including an 8-year-old boy who was shot in the head, his 4-year-old brother who was shot in the leg and the boys’ mother. The latest >

Lawsuit: A Texas woman is suing the American owner of a Mexican resort over the electrocution death of her husband. Jorge Guillen, 43, was killed, and his wife, 35-year-old Lizette Zambrano, was injured when they entered the hot tub on June 11 at the Sonoran Sea Resort, a complex of high-rise condos in Puerto Penasco, a resort town about 60 miles south of the Mexican border with Arizona. According to the $1 million lawsuit, an electric current running through the water in the hot tub zapped Guillen, who became trapped underwater. Read more >

Rachel Morin: Investigators have arrested a man in the killing of Rachel Morin, a Maryland mom whose body was found near a hiking trail in August 2023. Victor Martinez Hernandez was arrested in Oklahoma late Friday night and booked into the jail early Saturday morning on murder and rape charges, according to court records. Authorities said Hernandez had illegally crossed the border into the U.S. in February 2023 after allegedly killing another young woman in El Salvador a month earlier in January 2023. The latest >
