Public health crisis: The U.S. surgeon general has declared gun violence a public health crisis. “In 2022, 48,204 total people died from firearm‑related injuries, including suicides, homicides, and unintentional deaths,” Dr. Vivek Murthy’s advisory stated. “This is over 8,000 more lives lost than in 2019 and over 16,000 more lives lost than in 2010.” With the advisory, the nation’s top doctor is calling on the U.S. to expand universal background checks on gun purchases; ban assault weapons and large-capacity magazines for civilian use; and treat firearms like consumer products by requiring regulations about their safety and warning labels detailing risk. None of Murthy’s suggestions can be implemented nationwide without legislation passed by Congress. While Democrats have supported the types of reforms recommended by Murthy, most Republican lawmakers have rejected them. The latest >
