Developing: Iran fired air defenses Friday at a major air base and a nuclear site near Isfahan after seeing drones suspected to be part of an Israeli attack in retaliation for Tehran’s drone-and-missile assault. Iranian officials have not directly acknowledged the possibility that Israel attacked, and the Israeli military has not commented yet. Unnamed U.S. officials reportedly said Israel carried out the attack. The latest >
Zoom in: Isfahan, the central city in Iran where air defenses were fired at a major base, has long been home to Iran’s fleet of American-made F-14 Tomcats that were bought before the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Video has also shown two different anti-aircraft gun positions in Isfahan near its “nuclear energy mountain.” Details of the video included known features of Iran’s Uranium Conversion Facility, which operates three small Chinese-supplied research reactors and handles fuel production. Sites associated with Iran’s nuclear program, including its Natanz enrichment site, are also in Isfahan. Details >
High tensions: Drones spotted in Iran are suspected to be part of Israel’s retaliation for Saturday’s attack on Israel during the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. Iran launched more than 300 suicide drones and missiles toward Israel, but Israel says it and its allies intercepted nearly all of the weapons fired. Several ballistic missiles reached Israeli territory and caused minor damage to an air base. The Iranian attack came less than two weeks after a suspected Israeli strike in Syria that left two Iranian generals dead in an Iranian consular building. Full breakdown >

What happened: A spokesperson for Columbia University said Thursday that students participating in an “unauthorized encampment” in protest of the war in Gaza are being suspended. The New York City Police Department said it also made arrests at the behest of the institution. One of those being suspended is Isra Hirsi, daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who announced her suspension on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I just received notice that I am 1 of 3 students suspended for standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide,” she wrote. The encampment on campus is part of a pro-Palestinian rally that started before Columbia University President Minouche Shafik testified before Congress regarding antisemitism on campus. Students pledged to occupy the space on campus until the university divests from companies with ties to Israel. Shafik said the encampment violates the university’s rules and policies. What we know >
