Demanding answers: The House Committee on Homeland Security has demanded answers from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray regarding recent arrests of suspected terrorists at the U.S.-Mexico border. In a letter, committee Chairman Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., cited the detention of three Palestinian nationals and one Turkish national with alleged terrorist ties who crossed into the U.S. illegally in July. New weapons: A sheriff’s office on the border is equipping deputies with less-lethal weapons meant to be shot in the direction of migrants in an effort authorities say will help security without fatally harming anyone. Arms sales: The U.S. has approved $20 billion in weapons sales to Israel, the State Department announced. The impending sale includes more than 50 F-15 fighter jets, Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAMs, 120 mm tank ammunition and high explosive mortars and tactical vehicles. Ernesto: Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected to become a hurricane after brushing past Puerto Rico late Tuesday. Officials in Puerto Rico shut down schools, opened shelters and moved dozens of the territory’s endangered parrots into hurricane-proof rooms. Trump campaign hack: As presidential campaigns ramp up, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is warning both Republican and Democratic parties could be impacted by foreign actors trying to meddle with the 2024 election. The FBI announced it is opening an investigation into the recent hack of former President Donald Trump’s campaign, which campaign officials say Iran was responsible for. The investigation will also look at previous attempts to hack President Joe Biden’s campaign before he dropped out of the race. The latest >
UAW vs. Trump, Musk: The United Auto Workers union said Tuesday it has filed federal labor charges against former President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, accusing the pair of threatening and intimidating workers. The move comes after a conversation on X Monday night between Trump and Musk, who advocated for the firing of striking workers, which is illegal. “They go on strike and you say, ‘that’s OK, you’re all gone,’” Trump said. “You’re all gone, every one one of you is gone.” Read more >
Project 2025: One of Vice President Kamala Harris’ main points of attack on the Republican ticket is the controversial Project 2025, which she warns will go into effect should Trump get reelected. Trump has tried to distance himself from Project 2025 by saying he has “nothing” to do with it. Backlog: An inspector general-issued report revealed an unprecedented rise in improper payments amid a record Social Security Administration backlog. According to the report, as of February 2024, a record 5.2 million Social Security “pending actions” backlog resulted in $1.1 billion in improper payments. As the backlog continues, the proliferation of underpayments, overpayments and improper payments increases.
