CHICAGO (NewsNation Now) — The historic Harry Styles’ Vogue cover is sparking a conversation about evolving attitudes toward gender and acceptance.

Styles adorned the magazine’s December cover story.

He became the first male to be featured solo on a cover of Vogue. The fashion and lifestyle magazine has only had men on the cover 10 times in its 127-year history.

Styles is pictured wearing a tuxedo jacket and dress by Gucci. In his interview, he spoke to defying gender norms, his thoughts on personal growth and his music.

“I think with music it’s so important to evolve — and that extends to clothes and videos and all that stuff,” he told Vogue. “That’s why you look back at David Bowie with Ziggy Stardust or the Beatles and their different eras — that fearlessness is super inspiring.”

He is most known for his singer-songwriter role in the boy band One Direction.

He tells Vogue that wearing women’s clothing has allowed him to have fun with his look.

Joseph Longo from Mel Magazine joined NewsNation to discuss the cover. Longo is a staff writer at the magazine and has written articles for The Associated Press, Entertainment Weekly, and more. Watch the full interview in the player above.

Styles’ album “Fine Line,” released in Dec. 2019. His new album “Golden” is in the works.
