(NewsNation) — A Tampa attorney donated $1 million to the family of a man who died during the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Dan Newlin told NewsNation his actions weren’t “Democratic or Republican” — it was just “giving back to another American.”

Newlin’s donation was sent directly to the family of 50-year-old retired fire chief Corey Comperatore, who died after shielding his wife and daughter during the attempted assassination.

Newlin received a call from Trump’s campaign director, stating that the former president wanted to raise money for the victims’ families.

Trump was “very concerned about the victims,” Newlin said. “I thought to myself, here’s a man that was almost murdered … He was shot at many times and almost lost his life. … Let me just take that worry off your shoulder. And I will give the million dollars and also support the victims.”

In addition to the $1 million, he will also be giving $100,000 to each of the families of the rallygoers who were injured.

Newlin initially made the donation anonymously and said “no one would have ever known” he had contributed. It wasn’t known until Trump brought out Newlin’s check at the Republican National Convention and thanked him.

Newlin said he’s been blessed in his life and because he’s in a position to be able to help, he wanted to give back.

Newlin said he wants to travel to Pennsylvania to give the money to the families and meet them to let them know they “have a friend” who is a “fellow American.”
