(NewsNation) — A teenager who disappeared from her home in Gwinnett County, Georgia, more than a year ago has been found safe in Tennessee.
Gwinnett County police on Monday confirmed that Asata Amun has been in the Tennessee Department of Children Service’s custody for months. She was using an alias during her stay.
“A breakthrough in the case occurred when a Tennessee Department of Children’s Services case manager identified inconsistencies in Asata Amun’s statements, prompting further research into missing children in Georgia,” the police said in a statement.
Asata Amun’s disappearance
Amun, then 16, vanished from her home in Buford, Georgia — a suburb in the Atlanta metropolitan area — in February 2024. She was last seen on doorbell video “running out the front door” with no personal items the day after she was disciplined at school.
According to police, her father reported her missing.
Just days before Tennessee officials located Amun, her mother Jasmine Dominique spoke with Atlanta’s WSB-TV about her daughter’s disappearance. Dominique told the outlet that, even though she doesn’t live in Georgia, Amun called her last time she ran away from home.
“She knows my number. She could have sent me a message,” Dominique told WSB-TV.
The outlet reported that Amun’s two sisters were removed from her father’s home by Children’s Protective Service over physical abuse concerns.
Tennessee officials are working to transfer Amun to the Georgia Department of Family & Children Services.
“The investigation into her disappearance remains active,” police said in a statement.
